Once again, I’m a Pitch Wars Mentor!
Just like last time, we’ll start with a little about me. Honestly, not much has changed in a year, so if you’ve read my bio before, a lot of this will sound familiar.
I am a Blerd. For those not sure what this is, black *girl* nerd. Bonafide, card-carrying, comic reading, video game playing, light saber wielding, anime binging, wand waving (foolish included), cosplaying machine, and everything it entails.
The following is a list of other characteristics, qualities, titles, holdings, certificates, all that stuff that makes me, me, and a lot of randomness that fits in the world. Help you get an idea of who I am, since we’ll be working closely with each other. Not much has changed, so let’s get to it.
1. I am the undisputed Mario Kart queen.
Others will deny this, don’t listen. It’s an attempt to usurp my crown.
2. I’m a Spider-Man fanatic. I know all the things, I read all the comics-in all the various universes-I’ve seen all the movies, I own so much merchandise it’s ridiculous. This includes a lifesized doll plush thing that sits in a corner of my bedroom and freaks people out in the dark.
3. I’m a pirate. Of what, that’s for me to know and you to find out.
4. Cartoons are my weakness. I live for Saturday mornings. We will also accept Anime as an answer, particularly Full Metal Alchemist, D. Gray-Man–D. GRAY-MAN HALLOW IS OUT NOW ZOMG!!!!!!–Gundam Wing, Attack on Titan, and Sailor Moon, in no particular order.
5. Batman Beyond is awesome.
6. I am also a ninja. I have no pictures, because good ninjas never get caught.
7. THE CAKE IS A LIE!
8. T’Challa rules all.
9. I’m obsessed with all things pumpkin flavored.
10. I am thirdly a Power Ranger. One of the Lightstars from the In Space season.
Yes, I know all of the seasons, dunjudgeme.
11. I got the job as Professor of Divination after I applied last year.
12. All your base are belong to us.
14. Someone misplaced thirteen. Bad luck, that.
15. Mandatory Idris.
16. I’m very passionate about equality and diversity, both in publishing and in general.
I know one feeds into the other. Semantics.
17. I’m loud about the above. Note: twitter.
18. Black Lives Matter.
19. I’m here for #OwnVoices, particularly when it comes to race. Full stop.
20. Would you like…to try again?
Now then, on to the part about the words, because that’s what this is all about, right?
About my editing style, I work fast, but I also work hard. I do not sacrifice quality in order to get something done quickly, but deadlines are the law of the land. I will give them and meet those agreed upon, and I expect the same from my partner in crime. My love of writing and respect for the craft runs deep, my feedback is blunt and to the point and usually involves questions. Finding out the reason behind something is often the best way to forge ahead, in my experience.
I am a line edits type of gal. We’re here to focus on the big picture with your manuscript, but sometimes I cannot help looking at the little things as well. My critique partners will attest to the fact that I will plug a plot hole in one paragraph, then adjust sentence structure in another. The devil is in the details, as the saying goes. If you have a thick skin and are ready to break your story down to pieces so we can put it back together, let’s do this. We can make your manuscript better, stronger. We have the technology.
Soooooo, what I’m looking for. I love science fiction and fantasy, thus I’ll be accepting work in the speculative genres for Young Adult only. Sorry all other age categories. You are awesome, and I have written in all of them, but the majority of that work is in the young adult field.
My first love is urban fantasy, but it’s not my only love. If you can give me a YA Dresden Files, or anything that has an undertone of Anita Blake, with a distinct voice and fresh premise, I may be putty in your hands. I’m currently in love with pretty much anything Daniel José Older is putting out at the moment, to give you an indication of my current tastes.
If you go down the high fantasy route, I love stories of epic proportion that introduce me to a world I’ve never been to, but is still familiar enough for me to make myself at home. If you throw in a cast of characters I can root for, laugh with, and come to think of as family, I…that…please gimme? Think Dragon Age, particularly Inquisition.
For science fiction, I don’t do the hard sci-fi so much, sorry. But I love an off world adventure, or when the unknown lands on our doorstep. This also includes superhero and steampunk. Clockwork and petticoats, airships, submariners, sky-cities, oh my! I’m a Marvel girl at heart, though my love of the Justice League knows no bounds either. Ever see or hear of Young Justice? I was obsessed with that show. Seriously, obsessed. Give that to me in book form, I may have to draw blood.
Now that I’ve dealt with what excites me overall, let me hone in on a few things. Authors of Color, Native Authors, submit unto me all the things in those genres. My focus is on shining a light on tales from other parts of the world, dealing with other cultures, religions, histories. No, this does not mean I won’t mentor authors who aren’t from POC or Native backgrounds, just when it comes to stories ABOUT those typos of characters as the main focus, gonna go with #OwnVoices. Sorry, not sorry. Aside from this, all of the things I mentioned before? If you story has it, it’s mine. All of it. Mine.
That’s it! I hope some of what I said clicks with you, and if you believe there’s a chance we’ll get along, and that your work is something that will make me put on the boxing gloves. I’m not looking for perfection, I’m looking for potential. I’m looking for story that resonates with me to the point that I want the world to know what you have hidden away here, and I’m willing to work to show them. A gem is still a gem no matter how buried it is, so I will flight all others to get my diamond. And I will be victorious.

**DISCLAIMER** Friends, beloved critique partners–this counts for anyone I’ve swapped words with–I beg of thee not to submit to me. Not only will I look over your work at any time, chances are I’ve already viewed it and offered feedback previously. Thusly, I’m afraid, I will not choose a story by anyone I know or have critiqued before. Sorry, but them’s the breaks. Previous Pitch Slam critiques and W.C.N.V. entries DO NOT count.
